Here’s the comparison that helped us make our SIX THOUSAND dollar decision:
Old School (public) • Teachers never smiled and never said a word to Paul or me, even after Paul spent a whole day volunteering there. • Kids were not allowed to play on the soccer field, the basketball court, or the playground at any recess or before or after school. • Avery cried every day and refused to go to school as he was frightened of his teacher. • Both kids were not allowed to ask questions during class. • The children were wonderful. • Conveniently located on my way to work. | New School (private) • Teachers hugged me and the kids on the first day of school (remembering our meeting the Friday before) and checked in with me about the boys before and after school. • Kids can bring balls to school and play on all fields and structures. Boys joined soccer and cricket teams. • Avery is no longer crying. • One of the school's guiding principles is to ask questions and seek help when needed. • The children are wonderful. • Inconveniently located on the other side of Bridgetown. Can take 1.5 hours on the city bus during commute hours. I don't have a car. |
Other than our school and transportation challenges, we love it here! We get to swim in the ocean almost daily, have met lovely and generous people, and look forward to exploring more of the island. The beauty here is breathtaking. Early this morning, I ran to one of the highest points of the island with my new running partner Ralf and saw the sun rising over the Atlantic on the east side of the island while the moon descended into the Atlantic on the west side. It was magical. Other perks: my new colleagues have been incredibly flexible with me, our "landlord" has been overwhelmingly helpful and kind ( a new friend really), and we live in a safe, clean, and gorgeous part of the island! I am also grateful that Skype and WhatApp are free and that you cared enough to read this! :-)
